Akazu Ware

Akazu ware is a distinctive form of pottery crafted in the vicinity of Akazuchi, situated in the eastern part of Seto. Notably, this craft stands out as the pioneer in employing the innovative technique of glaze enamel application, a distinction even among Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. The journey of Akazu ware began with ash glaze during the Heian Period (794-1185). Subsequently, the craft evolved with the introduction of iron glaze and Koseto glaze during the Kamakura Period (1185-1333). By the beginning of the Edo Period (1603- 1868), the repertoire expanded to encompass the seven established glazing techniques.
